On the page about setting up CFBuilder for debugging CF (https://helpx.adobe.com/coldfusion/developing-applications/developing-cfml-applications/using-the-coldfusion-debugger/set-up-coldfusion-to-use-the-debugger.html), there is a point (currently steps 13 and 14) where it says that that we one is "not running" Java 1.6, they ought to copy the tools.jar file from their jvm into the cf lib folder.
That reference needs to be made much more clear, as to when one may need to do this.
First, that is an old discussion from the days when CF came out running specifically on Java 6 and it was speaking to if someone may have updated CF to use a more recent JVM (in which case the default tools.jar file in CF's lib folder needed to be updated to the new JVM).
The wording as it is is not at all clear. What would someone running CF2016 or 2018 be expected to do with that discussion? Since the most recent installers of CF2016 and 2018 came out on Java 8 and 11, respectively, they would read this and think they need to "copy the tools.jar", when in fact they may not need to.
And even if it clarified when one DOES need to, it could do better describing HOW (meaning, where the user should find the file in the JVM that CF is using).
FWIW, I will point out that there is one blog post on the CF Portal that addressed also the issue updating the tools.jar, relative to web services, at https://coldfusion.adobe.com/2015/07/when-should-tools-jar-be-updated-in-coldfusion-server/. You can see in the comments that followed (over a dozen) there remained confusion even then, so this does need to be handled carefully.Attachments:
