Problem:
The default setting for Global Client Variable Updates is "on," meaning that on every request, CF updates the client variable storage area with updated 'lastvisit' and 'hitcount' values. On a busy application with database storage for client variables, this translates to a large amount of network traffic and many blocking database operations, both of which contribute to ColdFusion application slowdowns under heavy load.
I recommend the default for "global client variable updates" be "off." Also, please display a warning message in the CF administrator to let the user know they are enabling a potentially dangerous feature.
Method:
Install CF, navigate to administrator client variable settings, add a new client variable datasource.
