To be clear then, if someone has a paid-up license for ColdFusion 11 (which is currently supported by Adobe), they first have to buy an upgrade to ColdFusion 2016 and then buy an upgrade to ColdFusion 2018? Or do they have to buy a full ColdFusion 2018 license all over again?

Yes, Carl. Upgrade now while ColdFusion 2016 is being sold and then upgrade to ColdFusion 2018. Or buy the full ColdFusion 2018. Also, this does not apply to anyone who has a maintenance contract for ColdFusion with Adobe.

Rakshith, can you tell folks how they would buy the CF2016 upgrade license? If one visits the CF product page (https://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion-family.html), the only links offered to "buy" are for full versions of CF Std or Ent. (I thought it used to be that in clicking those, one then saw on the next page an option to choose whether to do an upgrade or full license, but now there is no such choice.) So it's not clear how one, seeing this post, would proceed if they wanted to. In the meantime, I will point out to readers that there are of course resellers for CF, and one is the company Intergral, makers of the FusionReactor (the monitor for CF and other CFML and Java servers, at fusion-reactor.com). Their site for CF license purchases is https://www.buy-adobe-software.com, and they DO show upgrade (and full) prices, and of course those are at a discount off the list price.

Sure, Charlie. When you click on buy now, there is a "Purchase Upgrade Version" option at the top right. Clicking that take you on the path to complete the purchase for an upgrade.

Thanks, Rakshith. But we must be seeing different results. When I click that button (the one in the top right corner), it goes to the checkout page which reports, "you're buying Adobe ColdFusion Edition (2016 Release)". There is indeed a "type", "platform", and "language" field, each saying "full license" "all available platforms", and "English", respectively. I cannot change any of them. Only the quantity can be changed (which tells us this is not some JS problem). And again, this is in all browsers I've tested: Chrome, FF, Vivaldi, and IE. And each of the other "buy now" buttons does at least pick the product for which they are listed. But there seems no way with any of them to change the product, type, platform, or language. And of course what we're talking about here particularly is if someone wanted to change the "type" to "upgrade". I'm not seeming how they can do it. Can you confirm if you see differently? Can anyone else chime in, if reading along?

Wow. So I'll remind people wanting to buy an upgrade online that they can do so (and at a discount) at https://www.buy-adobe-software.com/. That's the sister site of fusion-reactor.com, where CF and CFB are offered, in all available versions and editions, both full and upgrades, each clearly presented with their prices and discounts. Hope that helps some wanting to buy an upgrade before 2018 comes out (speaking to the original point of Rakshith's post here).

ColdFusion (and Builder) 2018 is now out, and when I look at the buying options for ColdFusion Builder 2018, I only see an option to upgrade from the 2016 release, and not version 3. I am not impressed. Have we been misled, or is there an option to upgrade from version 3?

We purchased 2016 a couple months ago and when 2018 was releases we decided to go ahead and do the upgrade, do I need to use an upgrade installer? I've installed using the full version but it won't take the license code that we have.

Jimmy, I think I can help you understand the situation and your choices. The quick answer is that no, there is no upgrade installer. And no, your CF2016 license will not work in CF2018, unless you buy an upgrade license for it (in which case the 2016 license will be needed to confirm you did own it). And folks can get that upgrade or full CF 2018 license at a discounted price from resellers like buy-adobe-software.com. Finally, Jimmy, you may not need to pay for the upgrade since it seems you bought CF2016 within weeks of CF2018 coming out. Reach out to cfsupp@adobe.com for more. I had first written a longer answer, and for those wanting more details, read on. First, to be clear, there is no "upgrade installer" for CF (the last of those was 9.0.1, which was only an updater for 9.0). When moving from one version to another, it's always been that the new-version installer implements itself alongside of any current version. Second, you say that your license won't work. Is that the license you use with 2016? Well then no, that won't work with 2018. You need a new key. Again, this is always how it's been. The only time the old key would be used is when you buy an "upgrade license", where you can buy the new version (and get that new key) at a discounted price. When you put in that new key, CF would detect that it's an upgrade license and would ask for your prior version key also. Perhaps that's what you're (understandably) recalling as an "upgrade" process. Note that this "upgrade" discount price is offered ONLY for the immediately preceding version, though. So since you refer to being on 2016, that would be your next step. Those on 11 or earlier would NOT be able to get that discount for 2018. Indeed, since 2018 has come out, cf2016 is no longer available for sale. Folks wanting to buy that would need to buy 2018 (a certain way) and "backward license", as discussed (when 2016 came out) at https://coldfusion.adobe.com/2016/03/adobe-coldfusion-backward-licensing/. But here's some potential good news for you, Jimmy: since you say you bought CF2016 only a couple of months ago, you may be able to get the upgrade license for free, since 2018 came out only in July. I seem to recall hearing of a bit of a grace period about that in the past. Reach out to cfsupp@adobe.com to ask about that. Finally, for anyone buying a CF license (full or upgrade, for CF or CF builder), note that you can get a discount from resellers. I recommend you check out https://www.buy-adobe-software.com. This is a sister site of the makers of the FusionReactor monitor for CF. They always show CF prices at discount, including upgrades and other details that are often hard to find so readily on the Adobe site. So there you have it, Jimmy. A long answer to a short question, but it anticipates follow up questions you might reasonably have asked. (Btw, I don't work for Adobe.
